Sheikha Fatima's land gift to shelter in Abu Dhabi

The Ewa'a Shelters for Women and Children, which has been operating from rented space since opening in 2008, will soon move to new premises donated by Sheikha Fatima, the wife of the founding President, Sheikh Zayed.

Maitha Ghanim Al Mazrui, coordinator and follow-up officer at the shelter (ESWC) in Abu Dhabi, said she appreciated the generosity of Sheikha Fatima, known as the Mother of the UAE, towards it. The shelter provides a safe place for women and children, and victims of human trafficking.

"We are not sure when the construction work will start as we are still studying different aspects of the projects and hopefully we start soon,"

Ms Al Mazrui said.

The land donated to the centre is sufficient to construct a better facility, including space for vocational and rehabilitation activities,

Ms Al Mazrui added.

The centre housed 23 victims of human trafficking this year.

Sheikha Fatima also donated Dh5.1 million to the centre in 2011,

according to Wam, the state news agency.

AD20121207727630-Abu_Dhabi-_Unit.jpg

The number of cases over past years is down;

there were

70 victims in 2009,

38 in 2010

and 49 last year.

Shelter is provided from one to six months.

Most of the victims prefer to return home as soon as possible.

"We got some cases where victims travelled back home and then again returned to the Emirates and started working in an other kind of work,"

Ms Al Mazrui said.

The organisation has two other shelters,

one in Sharjah and another in Ras Al Khaimah.

Women arrive at the sites by recommendation from police, churches and embassies.

Visitors must undergo a medical test at Seha after arriving at the shelter, because most do not have any identification papers and regular doctors will not see undocumented patients.

The women are also undergo psychological exams to determine what level of trauma they experienced.

"There is a standard story which happens to most of the girls where traffickers are out of the country," Ms Al Mazrui said. "They know where to find these illiterate and poor girls. They ensure them a very good job.

"Once they are here all their identification papers are taken from them and are locked up in a flat or villa and they are forced to work in a sex industry."

The Abu Dhabi centre can currently accommodate 60 people;

RAK and Sharjah can accommodate 35 each.

"The main aim is to raise awareness of human trafficking among residents. There are people who are forced into prostitution and this makes a big percentage of women," Ms Al Mazrui said.

"We are in process to sign an MoU with the hotel industry to provide them training with a certificate so that when they go back to their countries they can find jobs."

The shelters provide medical and psychological exams, rehabilitation, vocational training help with police and court proceedings.

At the end of the process, a victim is exempt from any charges by the Ministry of Interior.

According to Ewa'a's 2011 records, 25.6 per cent of victims were from Asian countries, 18.6 per cent from Eastern Europe, 18.6 per cent from the Gulf and 7 per cent from African countries.

Some 161 victims returned home at the end of 2011, thanks to efforts made by the shelters.

"There were some cases where we found jobs for the victims,

" Ms Al Mazrui said.

She urged the community to report trafficking suspicions to the centre, and requested that people make donations as well. Interested parties can call the centre at 800 7283 or 800SAVE.

The American Corner of Abu Dhabi City
confirms dedication to community service through
the UAE capital’s first volunteer fair
25/06/2012

link to Al Hosn University website

Local social entrepreneurs Salam Hamzeh Ghaith,
Isabelle Le Bon - Poonoosamy,
and Monja Wolf
discussed their experiences volunteering
and starting their own social initiatives

The American Corner of

Abu Dhabi City at ALHOSN University

brought together over 15 social organizations for its first-annual Volunteer Fair held on June 19, 2012. The event, the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, provided a platform for organizations in the area to educate the general public about the many volunteer opportunities which exist in the UAE. It also furnished a networking space for volunteers in the non-profit sector. The fair included a panel discussion, information booths from 15 organizations, and presentations highlighting the work of various UAE-based volunteer organizations.

The event began with remarks from Prof Abdul Rahim Sabouni, ALHOSN University’s Vice Chancellor and CEO, who extolled the great contributions the American Corner had made to the ALHOSN University community since its establishment on January 23, 2011. U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission Victor Hurtado, spoke about the importance of volunteering in the United States and lauded the American Corner of Abu Dhabi City’s efforts to establish ties with the surrounding community.

Notable members of the philanthropic community engaged in a panel discussion revolving around sharing experiences in volunteering and explaining the effort involved in building social initiatives. Panelists included Mrs. Salam Hamzeh Ghaith, the founder and president of Small World; Ms. Isabelle Le Bon – Poonoosamy, the co-founder of Nahtam Social Responsibility; and Ms. Monja Wolf, the German-born founder of Mumbai-based NPO Monyati Initiatives and speaker at TEDx Dubai in 2010.

The three panelists spoke about the importance of social entrepreneurship and encouraged those in attendance wishing to establish their own social initiatives to do so in a sustained and focused manner.

The panel discussion concluded with a donation ceremony

from Ms. Le Bon- Poonoosamy

on behalf of the Enthusiastic,

the all-female francophone volleyball team which she manages.

The Mauritian-born social entrepreneur gave funds earned from recent charity volleyball matches to a representative from Ewa’a Shelters for Women and Children.

It was a powerful moment that reminded the community of the purpose of the volunteer fair which was to make a positive impact on society through volunteering.

The fair provided an opportunity for community members to find out how to volunteer in Abu Dhabi and afforded representatives of various charities and non-profits the chance to network and share their accomplishments with other members in their field.

The MIS Department hosted the final lecture by Mr. Godfrey Supka, Regional Sales Manager of Fern Software, who presented on volunteering in the micro-finance sector and provided useful information on how students in most degree programs could become a volunteer or intern in a micro-finance institution.

Maimoona Malik, an MIS student and President of ALHOSN’s humanitarian club ‘Speak Louder’ who was also a student volunteer at the event, was thankful for Dr. Fadia Hegazy, the MIS Department Chair, for arranging the lecture. “The presentation introduced me to a new world of financing, how it was founded, and how it has been helping people progress out of poverty. It was amazing to see how micro-finance interrelated with so many fields, especially my major.”
Participating organizations at ALHOSN’s Volunteer Fair included Operation Smile UAE, Nahtam Social Responsibility, The Enthusiastic, Abu Dhabi Cause Connect, Small World, Friends of Cancer Patients, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Gulf For Good, Tamm Volunteer Program, Emirates Heritage Club, New England Center for Children, Ewa’a Shelters for Women and Children, Urban Planning Council, and Takatof.

About the American Corner of Abu Dhabi City:
The American Corner of Abu Dhabi City at ALHOSN University is one of four American Corners in the UAE and is among 400 worldwide. It was established through the United States Embassy to promote mutual understanding and the exchange of ideas between the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Maria’s Dhaka ‘boys’ get Dubai jobs

Charity worker’s race against time to help Bangladeshi shanty dwellers find Dubai jobs pays off.

DUBAI: A race against time to find life-changing jobs for seven Dhaka shanty dwellers in Dubai has paid off with the help of determined volunteers who groomed and trained them.

Emirates airline hired six of the seven as wheel assistants and porters after Eid, while the seventh, Eman Ali, 48, who previously worked as a security guard in Dhaka, was on tenterhooks with just one day left on his visa on Monday. He heaved a sigh of relief when he got a break just in the nick of time.

“I was thinking that If I had to go back home empty-handed, I would be a failure for my children and my wife,” said the father of three.

However, late on Monday afternoon, Media One Hotel hired Ali as a steward. Ali told XPRESS: “No words are enough to express my gratitude and joy.”

The month-long visit visa of the group, who came to the UAE on July 30, was sponsored by the office of Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Maria Cristina Foundation (MCF) founder Maria Cristina Conceicao, who brought the seven men to Dubai, thanked Shaikh Nahyan, Etihad and the new employers for their support.

Maria has helped around 600 children leave their slum life since her charity school project began in the Bangladeshi capital in 2005. “We’ve made every the effort to find job for all seven guys in entry-level positions. As usual, Dubai has proven to be a generous city,” said Maria, who has earlier brought students from the Dhaka slums on scholarships with Dubai’s Gems schools. MCF had previously placed 20 men trained in her Dhaka community school in Dubai jobs.

Maria funds the charity with her sponsored adventures and donations. She is currently training hard to climb Argentina’s Mt Aconcagua in December and Mt Everest in April 2013.

HACKERS HIT MARIA’S EMAIL

Maria has said her e-mail account was hacked earlier this week. “Scammers will try anything to sound legitimate so you’ll send them money. They’ll say I’ve just moved back to the UK, they’ll pose as MCF! Don’t believe it. Don’t send money to anyone under any circumstances.”

Bien que ce soit les vacances

LOGO-GOOD-RES

L'équipe fait encore parler d'elle et surtout de ses bonnes causes,

par l'intermédiaire d'un article paru

dans le magazine franco-anglophone des Emirats :

KHALEEJ MADAME

Il y a, cependant, quelques erreurs à corriger :

notre 1ère place du tournoi alors que nous avons terminé 3ème

et  la somme que nous avons donnée à Ewa'a shelter

qui était de 7000 dirhams, et non 4000.
